2026 Frog Log - Week 7

We left the tadpoles to themselves for 3weeks before we got a chance to photograph them again.

We think you will agree that it was well worth the wait though.

I figured out how to get up close to the tadpoles, although it would take a few weeks to master the techniques of shooting this close.

There was a flurry of activity in the when these pictures were being taken.

2026 Frog Log - Week 4

Life in the pools had evolved into the tadpole stage by the time we visited at the end of week 4.

It was amazing to watch as these tiny little creatures gained the ability to move independently and were really excited about the freedom it afforded.

It truely is a blessing to be able to observe nature doing its best work.

Frustration was starting to set in as I wanted to get better quality images.

2026 Frog Log - Week 3

Now that the frogspawn has arrived, the frog pool will be a regular stop on our bog walks.

While it hasn't changed much since last week, there definitely seem to be more clumps of spawn now.

The first image shows a large clump of spawn that was laid in pool that is lined with sphagnum moss.

2026 Frog Log - Week 2

We began monitoring the pools at Stormanstown Bog for frog mating activity in late February, but unfortunately we missed the initial activity. While the frogs themselves were gone, we found several clumps of frogspawn in the High Bog area. Interestingly, while the spawn was concentrated in just one pool last year, it is now spread across most of them in that area.

Next year, we'll make sure to begin monitoring sooner so that we don't miss anything.

We’ve included some images from the first visit on Sunday 22nd February 2026.

Frog Study

We discovered a few pools of frog spawn in late February and decided to start tracking them. 1 day I arrived to discover that the mating season was still ongoing!

We started monitoring the pools and this lasted for about 3 months, by which time the froglets seem to have emerged from the water and moved away from the area.

Northern Lights ( Aurora Borealis )

Getting to see the Northern Lights ( Aurora Borealis ) has been a bucket list item for me for a long time and I’d been making enquiries about taking a trip to Iceland or Norway with a group over the coming winter to hopefully see them, but I did say to myself that it wouldn’t be the same as seeing them closer to home.

I’ve made a few unsuccessful attempts to capture them locally over the years and have been following a few website \ Twitter accounts for forecasts. They regularly highlighted the type of figures we would need to see on the forecasts for the display to be visible in our area. Imagine my surprise in early May when the alerts started coming in and the figures were off the charts! There was only one place to be that night so I headed for the bog.

It truly was an awesome experience to witness this phenomenon standing in a place that is so close to my heart.

These are some of the images I captured over the space of an hour that night.

I will be adding more content on a regular basis of things I notice when I’m out walking through the bog. with the dogs
